World Health Day 2024

Every year on April 7th, the world comes together to observe World Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about global health issues and advocating for universal access to quality healthcare. This year’s theme, ‘My health, my right’, underscores the fundamental human right to health and emphasizes the need for equitable access to essential health services, including mental health care.

The significance of World Health Day cannot be overstated, especially in a world where millions face barriers to accessing basic health services. Diseases, disasters, conflicts, and environmental challenges pose significant threats to health and well-being. Mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, are among the most common health challenges globally, affecting 1 in 8 people. Yet, the majority of individuals with mental health conditions do not receive adequate treatment, often due to a lack of services, stigma, or limited access to care.

In this context, the World Health Organization (WHO) plays a pivotal role in promoting health as a human right and advancing initiatives to improve global health outcomes. One such initiative is the recent launch of a manual to support the delivery of psychological interventions. According to an article published by WHO in March 2024 [source], this manual aims to bridge the treatment gap by providing practical guidance on implementing evidence-based psychological interventions delivered by non-specialists.

The manual focuses on brief, manualized versions of psychological interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy and problem-solving therapy, which have shown efficacy in treating mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. By empowering non-specialist healthcare providers with the tools and knowledge to deliver these interventions effectively, the manual aims to increase access to quality mental health care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where mental health services may be limited.
